Reindeer Encounter – An Exclusive Reindeer Experience

Arctic Adventure: Reindeer Encounter in the forestland of Arctic Sweden.
Arctic Adventure: Reindeer Encounter in the forestland of Arctic Sweden.

Reindeer Encounter: A truly unique Arctic winter experience made possible through our close friendship, mutual trust and long-standing collaboration with the Kuhmunen family from Sirges Sámi community.

Discover a different side of Arctic Sweden on a private journey into the snow-covered forests surrounding Harads. Travel comfortably on a sled pulled by your guide’s snowmobile, far from the roads and busy tourist routes, to meet reindeer in their natural winter environment.

This exclusive experience has been developed by Arctic Adventure in close collaboration with the Kuhmunen family from Sirges Sámi community (Sirges sameby), whose reindeer spend part of the winter in the forests around Harads.

During the winter months, Arctic Adventure helps the Kuhmunen family care for their reindeer in the area. This genuine connection makes the experience truly special. Rather than visiting a commercial reindeer attraction, you are invited to take part in an authentic aspect of reindeer husbandry and learn about the animals, the land and the traditions that have shaped life in northern Sweden for generations.

The Experience – A Journey into the Winter Forest

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome from your local Arctic Adventure guide, followed by an introduction to the experience and a safety briefing. Wrapped up against the Arctic winter, you settle into a comfortable sled behind your guide’s snowmobile.

The journey takes you through quiet, snow-covered forests, along narrow winter trails and deeper into the landscape surrounding Harads. With your guide navigating the route, you can relax and enjoy the scenery without having to drive a snowmobile yourself.

Your destination is a secluded area where the Kuhmunen family’s reindeer are cared for during the winter, in the forest.

A Genuine Encounter with Reindeer

When you arrive, the engine is switched off, and the peaceful atmosphere of the winter forest takes over. Here, you will meet the reindeer and have the opportunity to help your guide with their daily care, including feeding the animals.

Unlike a conventional reindeer tourism experience, this encounter is connected to actual reindeer husbandry. Arctic Adventure assists the Kuhmunen family with their reindeer during winter and guests are invited to experience a small part of this work.

Your guide shares knowledge about the reindeer’s remarkable adaptations to the Arctic environment, their behaviour, their seasonal movements and the challenges of caring for them through the long northern winter.

You will also learn about the importance of reindeer husbandry and the relationship between the reindeer and the nature.

There are no staged performances or large groups of visitors. The focus is on genuine encounters, learning and respect for the animals. The reindeer’s welfare always comes first and all interactions take place calmly and on the animals’ terms.

Lunch by the Fire

After spending time with the reindeer, your guide prepares an outdoor lunch over an open fire in the winter forest. Enjoy carefully selected local ingredients and traditional flavors inspired by the region, accompanied by hot drinks and homemade pastries. Surrounded by the winter, you have time to warm up by the fire, listen to stories and enjoy the silence of the forest.

This is an opportunity to slow down, ask questions and discover the deeper connections between nature, wildlife and the people who call Arctic Sweden home.

The Journey Home

After lunch, you return to the sled for the journey back through the winter landscape. With a deeper understanding of the reindeer. The forest may feel a little different on the way home. You have not simply seen reindeer. You have experienced a small but genuine part of winter life in Arctic Sweden.

What Makes This Experience Unique? A genuine partnership with a Sámi reindeer-herding family

This experience has been created in collaboration with the Kuhmunen family from Sirges Sámi community. Arctic Adventure’s involvement in helping care for the family’s reindeer during winter provides a genuine connection to the Harads area.

A real experience, not a staged attraction

The reindeer are not kept solely for tourism. Guests visit an area where the animals spend the winter and where their care is part of ongoing reindeer husbandry.

Travel comfortably through the Arctic forest

You travel as a passenger in a sled behind your guide’s snowmobile. This allows you to fully enjoy the journey and the surrounding landscape without having to operate a snowmobile.

An intimate and personal encounter

Small private groups allow time to observe the reindeer, help with feeding, ask questions and experience the surroundings without feeling rushed.

Period

January 1th to March 31

What’s Included

  • Private guided experience with a knowledgeable local Arctic Adventure guide
  • Snowmobile-pulled sled transportation through the winter forest
  • Safety briefing and necessary safety equipment
  • Visit to the winter area of the Kuhmunen family’s reindeer
  • Opportunity to help feed and care for the reindeer under your guide’s supervision

More Than a Reindeer Encounter

This is not a snowmobile safari with a reindeer stop. The snowmobile is how we reach a place that would otherwise be difficult to access. What makes this experience exceptional is the opportunity to witness a genuine part of the reindeers life, made possible through a close local collaboration built on trust, respect and shared responsibilities.

An intimate journey into the winter forests of Arctic Sweden, where the animals, the landscape and the people who care for them are at the heart of the experience.

Nighttime Photography Tour – A Chance to Capture the Northern Lights

Arctic Adventure: Nighttime Photography Tour

Experience the Northern Lights through the lens of a camera.

The Nighttime Photography Tour is an evening experience designed for guests who want to do more than simply watch the Northern Lights. During the tour, you will borrow a camera and learn how to use the correct settings to photograph the aurora and the Arctic night.

Together with your local guide, you leave the lights behind and travel to carefully selected locations around Harads where the sky is dark and the surroundings provide good conditions for photography.

Before and during the tour, your guide will help you understand the basic camera settings needed for Northern Lights photography, including shutter speed, aperture, ISO and focus. You will learn by doing, with individual guidance adapted to your previous experience.

When conditions are right, we spend the evening photographing the Northern Lights, experimenting with different compositions and learning how changes in the aurora affect the camera settings.

The experience is not only about photography. It is also about being outside in the Arctic night, surrounded by forest, snow and darkness while waiting for the sky to change.

No previous photography experience is required.

Photography

A camera is provided during the activity.

You will learn:

  • How to photograph the Northern Lights
  • Manual camera settings
  • ISO, shutter speed and aperture
  • Manual focusing in darkness
  • How to use a tripod
  • How to compose photographs in the Arctic landscape
  • How to adapt your settings as the Northern Lights change

The focus is practical rather than theoretical. You use the camera throughout the evening and your guide helps you adjust the settings as conditions change.

Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and can never be guaranteed. We follow weather conditions, cloud cover and aurora forecasts and choose the location according to the conditions of the evening.

Even on nights when the aurora is weak or if it’s cloudy, the tour provides an opportunity to learn nighttime photography and experience the Arctic landscape after dark.

Included

  • Local Arctic Adventure guide
  • Camera during the activity
  • Tripod
  • Photography instruction
  • Transport to selected photography locations
  • Northern Lights and weather interpretation
  • Hot coffee or tea
  • Homemade pastries
  • Local flavours around the fire

Who is this experience for?

The tour is suitable both for complete beginners and guests who already have some photography experience. You do not need to understand manual camera settings before the activity. The purpose of the experience is to teach you how they work in real conditions.

Important

Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed. Weather, clouds and solar activity determine whether the aurora will be visible.

Private Ice Fishing Experience – Exclusive Forest Lake

A private day on a frozen forest lake where ice fishing, local knowledge, open-fire cooking and the silence of Arctic Sweden become one exclusive winter experience.

Ice Fishing – Winter | Private Experience

Far into the snow-covered forests of Arctic Sweden lies a secluded lake, accessible only to a small number of guests. Here, surrounded by deep forest, untouched snow and winter silence, we invite you to experience traditional ice fishing in complete privacy.

This is not simply an ice fishing trip. It is a private winter experience where fishing, local knowledge, food and the Arctic landscape come together.

A Private Lake in the Forest

Together with your local guide, you leave the village behind and travel deeper into the forest towards a privately accessed lake. During the journey, your guide introduces you to the landscape, wildlife and the long relationship between local people, fishing and the waters of northern Sweden.

When you arrive, there are no crowds and no busy fishing areas. Only forest, snow and a frozen lake stretching out in front of you. The guide selects the fishing area according to current conditions and explains how we assess the ice before entering the lake.

Then it is time to start fishing.

Ice Fishing the Traditional Way

You will learn how to drill through the ice, prepare your fishing equipment and fish using techniques adapted to the species found in the lake. Depending on the lake and current conditions, the fishing may include species such as rainbow trout, burbut or brook trout.

Experienced anglers can concentrate on fishing while the guide helps locate productive areas and adapts techniques to the conditions.

For guests who have never tried ice fishing before, everything is explained step by step.

Lunch by the Fire

While we fish, your guide prepares a fire beside the lake.

The fire becomes our meeting place during the day, somewhere to warm our hands, share stories and enjoy lunch surrounded by the winter forest.

A locally inspired outdoor lunch is prepared over the open fire using ingredients and flavours connected to northern Sweden.

Depending on season and availability, this can include local fish, reindeer or moose together with suitable accompaniments.

Hot coffee and tea are served together with homemade pastries and selected local delicacies.

For us, the meal is part of the experience.

Sitting beside an open fire on a frozen lake, surrounded by snow-covered forest, is often one of the moments our guests remember long after the fishing itself.

Your Local Guide

The experience is hosted by a local guide with extensive knowledge of fishing, the forests and waters around Harads and the Lule River valley. Local knowledge makes a considerable difference during winter.

Ice conditions, snow depth, weather, fish behaviour and accessibility can change throughout the season. The fishing location and techniques are therefore adapted to the conditions on the day of your visit.

Your guide will also share stories about fishing traditions, wildlife, the landscape and life in Arctic Sweden.

We intentionally keep the group small so that the experience remains personal.

A Genuine Arctic Experience

Success in fishing can never be guaranteed. That uncertainty is part of real fishing. The value of this experience lies equally in having access to a private frozen lake, learning from a local guide, fishing in an extraordinary winter landscape and sharing food around the fire.

Some days bring several fish. Other days require patience.

Both are part of fishing.

And when a trout or Arctic char finally appears through a small hole in the ice, the wait suddenly makes perfect sense.
